Electrocardiogram

An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a diagnostic test that records the heart’s electrical activity. Every heartbeat is initiated by an electrical signal generated by specialized cells in the upper right chamber of the heart.

Indications for ECG include:

  • Monitoring the heart’s electrical activity.
  • Evaluation of unexplained chest pain, which may be related to conditions such as heart attack, angina, or pericarditis.
  • Identifying the cause of symptoms like shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting, or irregular/rapid heartbeats (palpitations).
  • Detecting thickening of the heart chamber walls (hypertrophy).
  • Assessing cardiac health in individuals with risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, or a family history of early heart disease.
